"Would You Connect to an Unsecured Wireless Network?"

After reading the Ethics and Issues section in Chapter 5, I've learned that 25% of wireless networks are unsecured. Having and unsecured network will leave it available for anyone who comes across it to log on and use it.  If you have a data cap this could give you the risk of having an overage charge. Criminals often use an unsecured network to cover up technology-related crimes. Electronic Communications Privacy Act (ECPA)  states that it isn't illegal " to intercept or access an electronic communication made through an electronic communication system that is configured so that such electronic comminucatin is readily accessible to the general public." But it doesn't state whether it is referring to unsecured home network and a public hot spot or just the public hot spots.  So as for the question "Would You Connect to an Unsecured Wireless Network?", no I wouldn't connect to an unsecured network unless it was the BCC network while I'm attending the college because I feel it is stealing, you are essentially getting internet free while someone else is paying for it. Also using and unsecured network could compromize your computer or mobile device you will be more secepitble to getting virus or malware and your information could also get stolen.

Employers asking for Facebook passwords

After reading the article on employers asking for Facebook passwords I can understand that an employer would want access to view the profile on a social network of a potential employee because they an get  better sense of who you are. But I feel that they should see what everyone else is allowed to see. Giving them the password is out of the question. If you give your password to a company or future employer how do you know your information will be protected and kept out of the wrong hands? You don't, do you. Everyone has the right to privacy and if there is something you are not willing to share with family and friends why would you give it to a company with complete strangers? You wouldn't now would you.  If your password gets in the wrong hands your privacy, personal information and identity could be at risk. For me this is a risk I will not take. If this will cause me not to get the job or cause me to lose my current job then so be it there are other company's and employers what are willing and understand the need for privacy. My Facebook profile is set to public I have nothing to hide but I don't feel an employer has the right to any personal account password.

Learning Microsoft Word 2010

Microsoft Word 2010 is was really easy for me to learn. I've been using Microsoft since I was in middle and high school. I know they update the program but the way it operates hasn't really changed just the appearance for the most part.  The tutorials in the chapter helped me get me refreshed so i could operate through Microsoft Word at a more efficient pace. The part of the Word chapter I really enjoyed was editing the flyers.
Chapter one helped me to get better antiquated with the types of digital devices, the types of software and digital technology period.  Chapter two was all about the internet.  It helped extend my knowledge searching, sharing and communicating on the internet. I never knew that there where so many types of search engines until I read the chapter.

"What Punishment for Webcam Spying Is Appropriate?"

"Should webcam spying be comparable to other types of spying?" Well yes I do, to me spying is spying no matter the means you use to do it.
"What kind of privacy should you expect when you are in a public place?" I would like to have the same kind of privacy that I have in a private area, however from what I've read that is not the case.   If a news paper or TV reporter ask permission before using your picture then I feel the same should be true from a webcam standpoint.

Now that I know that my webcam can be accessed without my knowledge and take pictures of me and my surrounds makes me want to place something over it unless I'm using it so if it is hacked or turned on by a software program then they will just see a black screen.

Learning Office 2013

This week we have learned about Office 2013, Most of this I have done before on older programs.  I bought my new laptop at the beginning of this year which has Windows 8 and Office 2013. My last laptop had Windows Vista, so imagine my shock when I was introduced to Windows 8. The Office 2013 is a little different on the layout of the programs I’ve used in the past but you mostly maneuver the same as older programs, so I feel this week has been more of a refresher for me on the things that I haven’t had to do in a while.  The lecture noted and book proved helpful with the pictures to demonstrate what was being said.  I thought the assignments where very easy to complete. I use the program daily to keep my different classes assignments organized and I had done most of these things before on older programs throughout educational experiences.  I look forward to when we reach the chapters that will help me learn the full potential of my laptop and all the things I haven’t learned yet.

Welcome and Introduction

Hi, I'm Brandie Beck I was born and raised in Lexington, NC but moved to Bladen County in 2007 where I got married and had our wonderful son who will be turning 4-years-old tomorrow.  I'm taking classes at BCC and that's where this blog comes in, it for my CIS 110 so hang in there with me!  When I think about technology overall I have an open opinion and I feel technology is an important part of our daily lives.  At times technology can overwhelm me when I find myself trying programs I've never had any experience with but I manage through it.  I do feel that technology is running our lives but its mostly in  good way.  It keeps us current, connected, saves lives, detects and diagnose diseases and helps treat them, if you don't know something look it up.  We encounter different forms of technology daily, everything we touch weather it be a cell phone, TV, car, ipad, ipods tablets medical equipment even appliances have some sort of technology so wouldn't you think technology kind runs our lives?    I'm very optimistic that technology is going to take us further than we can even to begin to imagine.  The full potential of technology has yet to be realized and with the right person and the right talent the possibles are endless and will continue to be endless.   I can't wait to see what the future holds!
